Does Eye Cream Really Work?

Introduction

Eye cream is one of the most hotly debated products in the beauty world. Some people swear by it, while others don’t see a difference between using eye cream and any old moisturizer. Eye creams can reach pretty high on the price range for skincare products. A single jar or tube of eye cream can start at anywhere of 30 dollars, and it only increases with the number of superstar anti-aging products in it. If an eye cream has retinol, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, peptides, kojic acid, or any of the like… be prepared to pay up to 60 bucks for a tiny little container of cream that is a fraction the size of your regular facial moisturizer. Yet, some people swear by eye cream and religiously spread it under their eyes, claiming that this magic little potion is what keeps the eye bags, eye circles, fine lines, wrinkles, and darkness at bay. This little pot, they proclaim, is the elixir of youth. It is what keeps us looking young forever.

The other camp will scoff at their misplaced beliefs, and say that eye cream is just moisturizer — very expensive, overpriced, over-marketed, and overhyped moisturizer. What does eye cream do that our regular skincare products can’t? Hyaluronic acid? I can just get a much more potent serum for that extra dose of moisture and hydration. Retinol? My dermatologist prescribes a medical-grade one that is stronger and much more effective than any of the retinoids on the commercial market. There simply isn’t anything that can convince me a small, severely overpriced tub of eye cream can’t do that my own skincare routine can! It is a debate that has lasted for very long, and the question hence remains: does eye cream really work?

What makes eye cream different from moisturizers and serums?

You can think of eye cream as a supercharged and targeted moisturizer specifically for the delicate skin under our eyes. The skin around our eyes is particularly vulnerable to showing the earliest signs of aging. This is due to a few factors.

The skin around the eyes is extremely thin. Just touch the right skin under your eyes and you can feel just how thin and delicate it is. It certainly does not have the same plumpness that you can feel if you touch your cheeks. There’s barely anything to pinch under the eyes. The delicate thinness of the skin around our eyes means that the skin here is much more prone to breaking down and becoming loose and fine lines, wrinkling, and thinning will occur in this area a lot faster. Another reason why the skin under our eyes does not have that same elastic, supple feel as the rest of our face is that it does not have a lot of the essential elements that give our skin shape and elasticity. The skin around the eyes does not contain soft tissues such as fats and muscles which give structure to the skin. Collagen and elastin are the proteins in our skin that give us bounciness and plumpness as well as structure. The lack of these supportive structures means that the skin is much more likely to cave in and collapse, causing wrinkling and lines. There is also a lack of oil glands in this part of the skin. Oil glands are essential for producing the oil known as sebum which keeps the skin supple, elastic, and smooth. To make matters worse, this already delicate and thin skin covers the eye socket, which is hollow, and hence the skin is so very vulnerable to collapsing and caving in.

Eye cream is hence very important in helping us to add that much-needed extra moisture and suppleness to this very delicate part of the skin. Another reason why we sometimes need a different moisturizer for under our eyes is that the skin is so delicate and near the eyes, regular moisturizers run the risk of irritating or causing sensitive reactions. Eye creams often have a more gentle formula than most moisturizers because the skin is so thin and delicate, making it more prone and vulnerable to sensitivity and irritation.

But can eye creams really do all the anti-aging magic they proclaim to do?

Many eye creams have much more targeted anti-aging properties since this area is vulnerable to experiencing aging. Eye cream treatments often target reducing fine lines and wrinkles, moisturizing, dark circles, plumping, and stimulating collagen production. They sound pretty similar to what anti-aging serums and treatments aim to do. They often include ingredients that seek to replenish and restore the skin’s youthfulness by supplementing the skin processes and elements that we lose as we age. These include natural oil (sebum), collagen, elastin, hydration, moisture, and a strong skin barrier.

But this is also where most of the skepticism begins. We are all familiar with the common adage that prevention is better than cure and that is very much the case with anti-aging products. It is a commonly accepted belief that while anti-aging products can help to maintain the skin and prevent it from accelerated aging, it doesn’t actually do very much to reverse or prevent aging from occurring. Retinols, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, peptides… they’re all very well and good but their effectiveness is quite limited in actually combating the effects of aging that have already occurred. So what makes eye cream any different? Why should we believe that eye cream can tackle aging if other anti-aging products can’t? It’s a very valid question and is certainly one that many people hold fast to.

Dermatologists too are torn over this perennial debate. Some think eye cream is overhyped, others think it is necessary. But if there’s one thing they can agree on, it’s that if you get an eye cream you should look for one or both of the following ingredients: retinol and peptides. Retinol helps to speed up our cell renewal process for fresh, healthy skin, and peptides can strengthen the skin by restoring texture and plumpness.

Conclusion

Whether or not you believe in the power of eye cream, the important thing is to know your ingredients and what will be beneficial for your specific eye concerns.
