The thinning of skin occurs as the fat cells in the subcutaneous layer shrink. The combination of thinning skin with a loss of elasticity results in wrinkles. 

But wrinkles don’t just appear when your skin gets older with age. In fact, wrinkles have their beginning from your childhood and younger years. Whenever you make facial expressions (smiling, laughing, frowning, crying, squinting, and so on), fine lines begin to develop in your skin. Due to your youth and hence the abundance of collagen and fats, this allows the skin to spring back to normal, which is why wrinkles and lines do not show on young people. However, as you grow older and the skin loses this property of elasticity, that is how wrinkles begin to become more pronounced. The lines in your skin are unable to bounce back the way it did when you were young, and that is how permanent grooves in the skin form. 

However, there is also an external aging process, and this is the process we have more control over, which is both a good and a bad thing. External aging occurs due to environmental factors that are damaging to the skin and is caused by free radicals that pull electrons from molecules in the skin, resulting in biological alterations to the cells. Skin proteins are damaged and as a result, skin becomes more brittle and less elastic. The biggest culprits of external skin damage are UV exposure (sun exposure) and smoking.

How to Reduce the Look of Wrinkles?

Prevention is obviously the best cure, but as we can glean from above you can’t really prevent wrinkles entirely, it is inevitable. However, you can delay the onset of wrinkles by making precautionary lifestyle habit changes. Sun exposure and smoking are the two biggest culprits of premature aging, so if you are someone who spends a lot of the time in the sun for leisure or smokes, you might want to reconsider these activities!

Now for those who are already mature and have seen their wrinkles appear, don’t worry! You don’t have to spend upward of a thousand dollars to get a facelift or dermal fillers. There are many natural remedies to combat the severity of wrinkles, and you probably already have these items in your kitchen! 

 

1. Egg whites

 

Egg whites are excellent for your skin. Not only are they a very nutritious source of protein, but they are also excellent for aging skin! Egg whites contain protein, vitamin B, and vitamin E which are great for firming up the skin, making it an excellent home remedy for wrinkles which are caused by brittleness and thinning skin. All you have to do is separate a few egg whites from the yolks and whip it up with a whisk. Apply it directly to your skin and let it sit for about 15 minutes or until it is dry. Then wash it off with warm water. The nutrients will firm up your skin and help reduce the look of fine lines. Just remember not to accidentally get it into your mouth as raw eggs are definitely not good for consumption! 

 

2. Olive oil

 

Olive oil is touted for being a natural and healthy source of fat, and it also makes for an excellent natural treatment for aging skin! It couldn’t be simpler, just massage a few drops of olive oil into your skin before you go to bed. Remove it the next day with a gentle washcloth and experience supple, firm skin! The numerous vitamins A, D, K, and E present in olive oil are excellent combats against free radicals that cause the skin to age. It also contains antioxidants that are great for giving the look of fresh, young skin. 

 

3. Lemon Juice

 

Lemons are an excellent citrus fruit that is full of vitamin C, a vitamin that is very beneficial to age skin. Vitamin C is known to fight free radicals as well. The acidity in lemon juice adds to its potency and helps to fight wrinkles. You just have to juice a lemon and add some water to it, then massage it into your fine lines and wrinkles. It will have the added benefit of brightening your skin, making it look fresh and lovely.

 

4. Aloe Vera

 

Aloe vera is well-known for helping repair skin damaged by the sun due to its cooling and soothing effect. The tropical cactus has been used for years as a treatment for ailments and skin due to its healing and moisturizing properties. Aloe vera contains a compound called malic acid, which is excellent for improving the elasticity of the skin, directly combating the reduction in skin elasticity which is why wrinkles form. Get aloe vera gel directly from the plant and remove the gel to use. You can apply the gel directly on your face, or mix it with vitamin E oil for added moisturizing benefits. 

 

5. Bananas

 

Not only are bananas a super delicious and nutritious source of fiber, but it also has lots of benefits for the skin! Take two ripe bananas, peel them and mash it up into banana goop. Then apply it to your face and let it sit as a mask for about 30 minutes. Wash it off after. If you want some additional brightening, add honey and avocado to the mix and you will get a lovely glow!
