Six Tips to Tighten Your Pores

Six Tips to Tighten Your Pores

Introduction

There are many inequalities that exist in our world, but the existence of people with poreless perfect skin is really proof that this world we live in is unjust and unfair. How annoying is it that some people have absolutely airbrushed, smooth skin IRL? These are the same people who claim to only splash their face with some water, have no idea what a serum is, and think that an exfoliator is a gardening tool. It just isn’t fair.

Poreless skin is something that only a very small, lucky percentage of the population has. The comforting side is, the majority of us struggle with visible pores! So don’t be too hard on yourself for not winning the genetic lottery, it’s a struggle that many people can relate to. But what are pores anyway? Why do we even have pores on our face? Don’t we already have enough skincare problems to deal with?

What are Pores?

Pores are basically small openings in the skin for microscopic molecules to pass through. They release sweat and oil and can also be found at the top of hair follicles. Sebum, which is the oil our sebaceous glands produce, release sebum through pores to keep our skin soft and moisturized. No matter how big your pores are, they are really essential for the skin to breathe, and are the link between the skin and the environment. Pores are necessary for maintaining our skin’s functions, as annoying and irritating as they can be! Some important things you should know about pores are:

  1. The size and look of pores are very dependent on genetics.
  2. Lots of factors like aging, the environment, and the sun can affect how big pores look.
  3. People with more active oil glands likely have bigger pores as this is the medium through which the oil is produced.

Can pores be gotten rid of or made smaller?

The unfortunate news is, no you can’t get rid of pores or close them up because you kind of need them and they are a crucial function of the skin. The second less-great news is that you can never permanently shrink your pore size. But the good news is that you can certainly take steps to minimize the look and appearance of them! Here are some tips for making your pores look smaller!

1. Stop obsessing over the pores!

The very first step is to stop obsessing over your pores! Stop looking at the mirror and magnifying your skin only to be disgusted and upset by how large they seem to you! Your fear of how big your pores seem to be is totally mental and only a problem for you. No one else looks at everyone’s pores and rates how big they are. Stop driving yourself crazy by staring at them.

2. Be diligent with cleansing every day

Cleansing is an absolutely vital step in every skincare routine and it’s also one of the best ways to keep your pores clean and healthy. When you keep your pores clean and free of any grime, dirt, and buildup, they’ll be less obvious. Think of your pores like holes in the ground — if you fill a hole with some other stuff it’s going to be a lot more obvious compared to an unfilled hole. So make sure to keep them clean!

The best way to clean your pores is to open them up first. You can do this through gentle heat and steam. Take a warmer shower and let the steam open up the pores. Or you can also use a warm wash towel and gently massage your face to open the pores up. After doing this, you can cleanse your face. It is best to cleanse your face thoroughly at night after a whole day so you can remove all the excess buildup on your face.

3. Incorporate an exfoliator into your routine

Exfoliating is super important in any skincare routine, and even more so to clean out those pores! However, it is also crucial that you do not over-exfoliate or are overly harsh with your skin because this can exacerbate the look of pores. Opt for a gentler exfoliator like a washcloth if you are using a physical one. Avoid using any grainy ones or those with rough beads as they can pull on your skin and make your pores look even bigger. Yikes! Best to stick to a chemical exfoliator or a soft towel.

4. Don’t touch your face!

This is a super bad habit that a lot of us are guilty of. If you aren’t cleaning your face or applying your skincare products, don’t touch your face! Our hands have a lot of bacteria that we obviously can’t see so the more you touch your face, the more bacteria is going to get into those pores, increasing the likelihood of blemishes and pimples. So try your very best not to touch your face, and definitely don’t pick at your pimples!

5. Use a clay mask once a week to deeply cleanse your pores

Clay masks are super effective at deep cleaning your pores that regular cleansing doesn’t do. Set aside one night a week as your self-care night and treat yourself to a nice spa-like experience! Clay masks are super good at unclogging your pores by pulling out the dirt and grime deep within. Did you know that gunk in your pores can make them look five times larger? Ew! So get yourself a clay mask, such as a mud mask, kaolin clay mask, or French green clay one, and slather it all over your face. Leave it on until it hardens, take some cute selfies, then wash it off with some wash water! You’ll see a noticeable difference in the look of your pores.

6. Skip the shimmer and glitter in your makeup

It’s a hard thing to part with, but shimmer is not your pore’s friend. Not at all. Any kind of shimmer and glitter will only serve to highlight and draw attention to the pores, which is exactly what we don’t want! If you can’t bear to part with your glow, don’t worry. You can apply some shimmer to the parts with smaller pores like the tops of your cheekbones. Just make sure areas with typically larger pores like the forehead and cheeks are matte and free of any shine.

Conclusion

While we can’t get rid of pores, we can definitely minimize the look of them! These six tips will have you looking more pore-less and perfect!
