Skincare Advice for Anyone with Oily Skin

Introduction

Oily skin is probably the most frustrating skin type to deal with. That midday greasiness that starts to form a film over the face is very uncomfortable, and it’s even worse when you wear makeup and everything starts to slide around. The pores begin to feel clogged up and blocked, causing worry of pimples and acne. No matter how much you try to scrub, use toners, blotting papers, cleanser… nothing seems to work. The dreaded oil film creeps over no matter what, and sometimes you can feel a new zit forming. Unlike dry skin which can largely be solved with some moisturizer and hydrating serums, oily skin doesn’t cooperate as well and leads us on wild goose chases for the perfect products to reduce the grease.

But oily skin doesn’t have to be such a pain! In fact, instead of thinking of your oily skin as an enemy to defeat, think about how you can work with your skin to tame and control the oil production levels.

The Basics

1. We have very little control over the oil gland activity

Remember that the skin is an organ and it is a very complex system made of many different processes. The oil glands, or sebaceous glands, have receptors that can be triggered by existing levels of oil in the skin and other factors like hormones. Hence, we have very little control over the level of oil production since it is up to the sebaceous glands to produce whatever level of oil the receptors are indicating. Understanding this is crucial to working with your skin and giving it the appropriate amounts of nutrients and products to maintain a balance of oil.

2. Oil production increases when there is a perceived lack of oil

This is an extremely crucial thing to remember when formulating a skincare regimen. The oil glands are triggered to produce more oil when the receptors sense lower levels of oil in the skin. So if you are cleansing your face every time you feel oily or using overly drying products such as alcohol toners or salicylic acid face washes in hopes of drying out the oil on your face, you are more likely to actually be stimulating the oil glands to produce even more oil by stripping your skin of oil. It’s a weird paradox, but that’s how it works! In trying to reduce the oil, you are actually increasing the amount of it. So don’t focus on getting rid of the oil because the glands will just keep producing more in response to the lower levels of oil.

Four Pieces of Advice for People with Oily Skin

If you are someone with oily skin, here are six key pieces of advice that you should consider in your approach to your skin.

1. Pick cleansers with the right ingredients and stick to washing your face only twice a day — morning and night

Overwashing your face is one of the causes of overactivity in the oil glands. By washing your face more than necessary, you are stripping the skin of too much oil, causing the sebaceous glands to produce even more. So stick to washing your face just twice a day — in the morning when you wake up to remove the oil accumulated from the night before and provide a clean base for the day, and at night to remove the build-up of dirt, grime, and other environmental pollutants from going about your day.

Pick the right cleansers for your skin. If your skin is just mildly oily, you won’t need something too strong, a gentle cleanser with foaming abilities should be good enough. If your skin is on the oilier side, you can look for ingredients that soak up oil such as turmeric, tea tree, turmeric, and honey.

2. Exfoliate, but not too much, just twice or thrice a week maximum

Exfoliating is crucial for all skin types, not just oily skin, because it helps to slough off dead skin cells and build up that might have occurred. It is particularly essential for oily skin as exfoliating will help to remove the top layer of dead skin cells that have mixed with excessive sebum on the skin surface which leads to acne such as blackheads, whiteheads, and more severe pimples. But don’t use an abrasive, rough exfoliant with grains or beads, and if you do be very gentle to massage it into your skin. One of the best physical exfoliants is a washcloth as the soft ridges will gently exfoliate the skin without being too harsh. You can also opt for chemical exfoliants such as retinoids which will do the exfoliation for your under the skin.

3. Do a weekly face mask, preferably one with cosmetic clay

Face masking is also important as it can boost your skincare regimen. For oily skin, look for masks that can help to soak up excess oil and draw out dirt and impurities from the skin. Some of the best masks are clay masks, and you should look for ingredients like Kaolin or French green clay which are all excellent for detoxing the skin.

4. Even though your skin is oily, don’t ever skip your moisturizer!

Skipping moisturizer is a common habit among people with oily skin. The assumption is that people with oily skin don’t need a moisturizer because the skin is already oily, what do we need moisturizer for? Well, moisturizer primarily helps to seal in moisture and water by creating a barrier over the skin. Even if your skin is oily, you still need that protective barrier to prevent moisture from escaping, otherwise, your skin might become a combination of dry and oily. Go for a lightweight water-based moisturizer that isn’t too thick or heavy as that too can clog the pores. You can also double up with an intense serum to impart lots of water and hydration into the skin, then sealing it over with a lightweight water-based moisturizer.
