The Best Ways to Maintain Your Pores

Pores can be a pretty tricky thing to handle. We all have pores, that’s not the problem. The problem is keeping our pores as clean as possible to prevent breakouts and acne from occurring. Some people might have pores that are larger and more open than others, and we might find it a problem as it might not look as aesthetically pleasing for one, and secondly, it is also more likely to result in acne as dirt and bacteria can get into the pores. We can’t really do anything to change the size of our pores, but we can take extra care to make sure we are not doing things that enlarge them even further.

What are pores?

When your pores are open, it means that you can visibly see the openings on your skin. Sometimes, you might even be able to see the pilosebaceous follicles, which are basically the hair follicles that have a corresponding oil gland. This is a sign that you probably have larger, more open pores than others. The other sorts of pores that you can find on your face are pores that have developed into blackheads. This occurs when dirt and dead skin cells accumulate on the pore creating a visible clog in the pore. Due to exposure to the air, this clog oxidizes and becomes dark in color, hence resulting in a blackhead. Furthermore, if you are someone with naturally oilier skin, you are more likely to have enlarged and visible pores due to the higher level of oil secretion. People with oilier skin tend to have larger pores as a larger channel is required for a higher volume of oil to pass through. This is also why people with oily skin have a greater tendency to have acne and pimples.

What happens when the pores get clogged?

When the level of sebum production in the skin is high, this results in a layer of excess oil or sebum on the skin surface. Sebum is important for the skin as it maintains the elasticity and moisture levels of the skin, but too much of it is when that greasy, oily feeling happens. Apart from sebum, our skin cells are constantly renewing, hence dead skin cells are being shed every second. When these dead skin cells and excess oil get trapped together inside the pore, it creates a blockage or a clog. Acne occurs when this clog gets infected with bacteria from the environment. Acne can range from less severe types like blackheads and whiteheads to more serious cystic acne sources when the clog gets trapped under the skin.

How can I keep my pores from enlarging?

While we cannot change the size of our natural pores, we can definitely take steps to ensure they do not enlarge. Our pores can indeed get bigger through some bad lifestyle habits. Here are some of the best tips to prevent your pores from getting bigger:

1. Don’t touch your face

This is a really bad habit that a lot of us are guilty of. If you aren’t cleaning your face or applying your skincare products, don’t touch your face! Our hands have a lot of bacteria that we obviously can’t see so the more you touch your face, the more bacteria is going to get into those pores and existing clogs, increasing the likelihood of blemishes and pimples. So try your very best not to touch your face, and definitely don’t pick at your pimples!

2. Don’t use products that might clog your pores even more

You should steer clear of any products that can block the oil glands, hair follicles, and pores. If your skin is already oily or you have generally larger pores, using products that are oily or will clog up your pores will lead to a higher chance of acne and pimples forming. Hence, you should check your makeup and skincare products to see that they are not comedogenic, which means they do not clog the pores. Look out for non-comedogenic products that will avoid blocking up the pores. This will definitely help control the level of clogging in your skin.

3. Cleanse your face thoroughly at night

Cleansing is one of the best ways to keep your pores clean and healthy. When you keep your pores clean and free of any grime, dirt, and buildup, they will not look so obvious. Most of us wear makeup and other products that can build up and accumulate in your pores over the course of the day. So it’s really important that we remove this buildup thoroughly and cleanse our faces. Following a double cleansing method is a good way to do this — remove your makeup with a makeup remover, then follow up with a gentle cleanser to get rid of the residue. The best way to clean your pores is to open them up first. You can do this through gentle heat and steam. Take a warmer shower and let the steam open up the pores. Or you can also use a warm wash towel and gently massage your face to open the pores up. After doing this, you can cleanse your face.

4. Try using aloe vera to tighten your pores

Fresh aloe vera can be very effective at tightening pores. If you’re lucky enough to grow these at home, just cut off a piece and remove the gel. Apply it to your face and massage it gently for about ten minutes. You will experience a nice cooling effect. Leave it on for about ten minutes then wash it off with cold water. Your pores will look smaller.

5. Use an exfoliator

Exfoliating is a really important step in any skincare routine, and even more so when you are trying to keep your pores clean. However, it is also crucial that you do not over-exfoliate or are overly harsh with your skin because this can exacerbate the look of pores. Grainy, harsh scrubs can pull on your skin and stretch out the pores, making them look even bigger. Opt for a gentler exfoliator like a washcloth if you are using a physical one. It is best to stick to a chemical exfoliator or a soft towel if using a physical exfoliator.

Maintaining your pores might sound like a daunting chore, but it doesn’t have to be! If you are diligent with your routine, you’ll notice your pores are not as obvious and your blackheads will decrease. Take the time to incorporate these habits and your skin will thank you!
