The Case for Eye Cream

Introduction

There’s lots of discourse around eye cream. There are two camps in the beauty and skincare world — those who think eye cream doesn’t work and is just a glorified and overpriced moisturizer. Then there are those who swear by eye cream as the cure for anti-aging and is crucial to maintaining a youthful and vibrant appearance. Dermatologists and skin care professions fall somewhere between this spectrum. There are those who think eye cream, like any other anti-aging product, is limited in its effectiveness because there is not much that topical products can do to reverse or counter the effects of an internal aging process.

It’s of course easy to immediately classify eye cream as one of those fads that we don’t really need. Why buy a more expensive tub of cream when what it does is pretty much the same as any other moisturizer? Why can’t I just use the same anti-aging skincare routine that I use on my face and on my eye area? What’s the difference?

In this article, we make the case for eye cream and why it’s important to have a separate product for this area of our faces.

Why should the skin under our eyes be treated differently from the rest of our faces?

The skin under our eyes is quite different from the rest of our faces in terms of structure. It is the most prone to the effects of aging due to the following factors:

1. The skin around our eyes is extremely thin and delicate

The skin around the eyes is extremely thin! You can feel it yourself if you simply touch the skin under your eyes. It does not have the same plumpness or bounciness that you would feel if you touch any other part of your face like your cheeks. This thinness and delicate nature mean that the skin is much more prone to breaking down and becoming loose. Fine lines, wrinkles, and thinning will occur in this area a lot faster.

2. The skin around our eyes does not have supportive tissue, fats, and proteins like elastin and collagen

The skin under our eyes does not have the same elastic, supple feel as the rest of our skin because it lacks a lot of the essential elements that give our skin shape and elasticity. The skin around the eyes lacks soft tissues such as fats and muscles which give structure to the skin. Hence, a lack of these supportive structures means that the skin is much more likely to cave in and collapse, causing wrinkling and lines. Collagen and elastin are responsible for giving our skin suppleness, firmness, and smoothness.

3. The skin around the eyes lack oil glands

Oil, or sebum, is responsible for keeping the skin smooth, moisturized, and supple. The skin around our eyes does not have nearly as many oil glands compared to the rest of our face, and hence it results in a propensity for dryness and thinness.

4. The eye socket is hollow and makes the skin more prone to collapsing

The skin around the eyes is literally covering a hole — the eye socket. The possibility of the skin caving in and sagging is hence even more pronounced in this area.

5. The thinness makes our skin here a lot more sensitive and vulnerable to irritation

Thinner skin with fewer fats is more susceptible to environmental irritants and agitation. Furthermore, being so close to our eyes means that this area is even more sensitive and there will be much more discomfort if the area gets irritated.

So as we can see, the skin around our eyes is not the same as the rest of our faces and we cannot treat it the same way! This area needs way more tender, loving care as well as an extra boost of hydration and moisture to prevent collapsing, wrinkling, and drying out.

What does a good eye cream do?

Good eye cream is able to fight oxidative stress and damage, adding moisture and hydration, and giving the skin the bounce and elasticity that it lacks. Your eye cream should have the following three types of ingredients: antioxidants, replenishing and restoring. Together, these types of ingredients will help you combat anti-aging by fighting free radicals that damage skin cells, pumping extra moisture and hydration into the skin, and restoring essential nutrients into the skin. Furthermore, it should have no fragrance because fragrances can cause irritation to the delicate skin and even your eyes. Here are some ingredients to look out for in an eye cream:

Antioxidants

Antioxidants help to protect the skin by combating free radicals which attack the skin by damaging healthy skin cells and creating oxidative stress. Antioxidants protect your skin against free radicals and also help in reducing pigmentation, fine lines, and wrinkles.

Examples of antioxidants: Vitamins A, B, C, Vitamin B3 (or niacinamide), green tea extract, omega-3 fatty acids, almond oil, linoleic acid, beta-glucan, curcumin, lycopene.
