What To Do When Your Lips Are Thinning
Aging isn’t pretty. It’s the development of fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes, crow’s feet, and losing your rosy, full cheeks. But, did you know that you can lose your lips whilst aging too? Collagen makes up 30% of the body’s protein, and 70% of the skin’s protein. Once this precious collagen is diminished, the structural integrity of our skin and volume decreases. Unfortunately, this process starts way early –– our lips have been gradually losing volume by 1% after the age of 16! Over the next 20 or 30 years, the lack of collagen will flatten out the V-shape of our upper lips, turning the corners of our mouths slightly down.
Ladies, don’t fret yet. We know how important lips are in framing the face. We’ve compiled a list of reasons for lip thinning, as well as the best prevention methods in combating lip volume loss.
Breakdown of Fat Pads
Our lips thin for the same reason we lose volume in other areas of our face: the breakdown of fat pads beneath the skin. These fat pads help to cushion the muscles and bones of our facial structure, which give us the trademark youthful and supple appearance. Similarly, there are fat pads in your lips that can cause them to be either naturally thin or full, depending on your genetics. As we age, it’s inevitable for these fat pads to shrink and gradually disappear. This will result in a generally thinner lip and overall volume depletion over the entire face. Though everyone is prone to aging, those born with a naturally thinner lip will experience more noticeable aging effects.
However, it’s highly unlikely to prevent volume loss in your lips –– that’ll require you to stop talking, eating, and drinking! Instead, your best bet is to observe and actively avoid lip-thinning activities, as well as get acquainted with several lip thinning treatments.
Hydrate Your Lips
The skin on your lips is more delicate than other parts of your body, so it requires constant care and moisture to be in tiptop condition. Lips are easily damaged by sun exposure, cold weather, matte lipsticks, dry air, dehydration, or even by licking your lips frequently. Furthermore, because your lips do not have the necessary oil glands to protect them from harsh conditions, they can get wrinkled and deflated easily.
Applying an effective lip balm is key to locking in long-lasting hydration and minimizing moisture loss over time. We recommend using it as a lip mask –– apply a thick layer of balm before makeup, then blot the excess off before applying lipstick. This leaves the lips looking plump and full, and letting the lipstick shine through.
For a comfortable, lightweight formula, this cashmere cream lipstick has your back. It is smooth and breathable; all without making your lips feel dry throughout the day.
Avoid Doing Excessive Smooches
You may not realize this, but certain actions –– such as smooching, puckering, drinking through straws –– can expedite the rate of collagen loss over time. As such, it might be a good idea to reduce or even cut out these actions from your daily life!
Adjust Your Daily Routine
Everyone hates to hear this, but getting a good eight hours of sleep and keeping hydrated can aid in boosting the production of collagen. Having insufficient sleep increases stress hormones and triggers a pro-inflammatory condition for your skin, which may result in puffiness around the eyes, deflated lips, and sullen-looking skin. After a long day of sweat and grime, giving your lips (and skin!) ample time for its nightly renewal process will greatly promote collagen repair and regeneration. Plus, you can try lip masks to aid in your collagen restoration process!
With powerful antioxidants, this lip mask will hydrate your lips while you sleep; expect to wake up to smooth and soft lips every morning by adding this to your nightly routine.
For the ideal night repair care, this lip mask with seven plant-specific coral lights will do just the job. It has a balm-type formulation that blocks moisture evaporation.
Using Natural Remedies
Using homemade remedies such as cinnamon oil and capsicum can act as a short-term way to effectively plump lips. However, do note that these products rely on a reaction to irritation –– this ‘full look’ occurs when blood rushes towards the lips, causing a natural ‘plumping’ effect to take place. This is similar to other lip-plumping glosses on the market, which also utilize irritants (such as chili peppers) to achieve the sought-after effect.
Whilst this may sound intimidating, this beauty trick is largely harmless for the majority without sensitive skin. Before attempting this hack, however, we encourage doing a patch test on your hand to test for allergies and irritation.
Overline Your Lips
You may not ever stop your lips from thinning, but you can keep them from looking like it! Overlining your lips may be the oldest trick in the book, but it can work wonders for people looking for that perfect pucker. Take your favorite lip liner and overline your lips slightly above the vermilion border, then fill in the gaps with lipstick or gloss to give the illusion of a full lip.
Avoid Artificial Lip Plumping Devices
Regardless of what social media tells you, squeezing your lips into a shot glass is not safe, and will not lead to long-term lip plumping. By cutting off blood circulation to the lips, these suction devices will lead to long-term tissue and nerve damage, and in worse cases, possible amputation. This will also result in accelerated collagen depletion and breakdown, and the possibility of forming long-term lines around the lips. Lastly, you place yourself at the risk of the device shattering and cutting your face and lips. Our verdict? So not worth it. Instead, seek out lip plumping devices that are safe for you, like SBLA’s Instant Lip Plump & Sculpt Filler for instance.
The SBLA proprietary blend containing phytonutrient-based LIPerfection™ instantly plumps lips, reduces fine lines, enhances shape and lip color, and increases lip fullness.

If All Else Fails… Try Lip Fillers and Botox
If you’ve tried the above recommendations and nothing seems to work, maybe it’s time to consider lip fillers and botox. We recommend consulting with your preferred dermatologist and selecting the appropriate injector for your lips –– too much filler can appear unnatural, and too little won’t be noticeable. However, lip fillers are not permanent and will only last for six months to a year.
Another great alternative to lip fillers is a lip flip: injecting Botox along the lip line to create a plumped lip look. A Botox lip flip is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that relaxes the muscles along the upper lip to ‘flip’ your lip upwards, recreating your youthful, full look. This is a relatively inexpensive and low-risk option compared to dermal filler, as they use smaller quantities of Botox. This procedure lasts for three to four months and requires regular touch-ups to maintain the look of fuller lips.
However, do note that injecting too much Botox can have disastrous side effects. Too much relaxation of the upper lip muscles can cause the lips to be unable to close and hence result in difficulty forming certain words, inability to spit, drooling, trouble keeping fluids down, drooping on one side of the mouth, etc.
Whether you’re looking for short-term chapped lips solutions or long-term lip filler injections, we’ve got you covered. We know how frightening lip thinning can be, but we strongly suggest avoiding blindly following the latest trends on social media. Do your research and speak to a professional if needed –– you’ll thank us in the long run!
